Birding Copper Canyon

Meet your tour guide

Sierra Madre area birds

Experience this vast river and diverse bird life! Amid the verdant tropical forest on the tranquil waters of the EL Fuerte River cruise you will find an oasis of flora & fauna.  A relaxed and beautiful experience, as well as a visit to the ancient Nahuatl Petroglyphs.  El Fuerte area birds

This tour can be scheduled anytime of the day at the client’s convenience.

On the other hand, a dedicated birding float tour is longer (aprox. 5 hrs.), you therefore need to start, at the river, by dawn.  It is important to have treks to view great birding sites including the famous "Motmot alley" and to explore ancient Nahuatl Petroglyphs as well.

The Bird sanctuary phenomenon that occurs by positively conjugating several ecosystems: the start of the Sierra Madre, the end of the Sonora’s Desert, and he fact that it is located an hour from the coast, has given the El Fuerte river,  a reputation to be comparable, by experts, to Costa Rica (The No 1 destination for birdwatchers)
More than 60 species of birds are frequently spotted from the boat as well as exotic flora. One can be certain to find exotic and interesting trees such as Morning Glory, Senna, Coral Bean, Ocotillo, Kapok, Amapa, Palo Verde, Elephant, Feather, Cottonwood, Sycamore, Cypress, Strangling Fig, Ures Palm, Hecho Cactus, and Organ-pipe Cactus.

Flora, Fauna & Wildlife

There is an abundance of incomparable flora and fauna and a large number of rare species found only in this part of the world. The plateaus are covered with vast forests, which are mainly pine but also include some oak, madrone, alder, juniper and poplar. There are 15 species of pine and as many as 25 species of oak. The vegetation at the bottoms of the canyons is an array of semi-arid and semi-tropical, depending entirely on the humidity and microclimate. There are cactuses of all different sizes. Also all classes of shrubs and bushes, as well as larger trees such as poplars, willows, ceibas, fig trees and countless others.

There are 20 different varieties of amphibians, 87 species of reptiles and 50 types of freshwater fish. Some of the fish are edible such as the catfish, bluegill sunfish, sardine, black bass, rainbow trout, carp and the Alberca silverside.
